100 Years Old Today

Happy 100th Olivier Messiaen!

An interesting discussion, with examples of Messiaen's music can be joined at New Liturgical Movement.

Hear more his music performed live this Saturday at Columbia University's Miller Theatre, or right here on You Tube (repost of Libby's senior recital finale):

Ack! I love this, and we live near Miller, but can you imagine, we're trying to choose between three string concerts for that night, and can't go to any because suddenly C.Z. has a recital that will last until 7:30 (or beyond)?

Yes, I'm sure you can, since you are a New York area mom with a violin-loving child, at Christmas time!

Yes! I know! Friday Libby is at Carnegie Hall, but her brother (Principal violist in his high school) has his concert, too. We are going to divide up the evening, and I guess I'll go up to Miller to see Libby the next night, but she'll miss her brother. And she'll miss his Christmas concert with the NYYME on Sunday, too, as she must work.

I like Messiaen, but I'll really miss seeing her play mandolin at Carnegie (it'll be her first time playing in the main hall there).

I hope C. Z.'s recital goes well! It's such a pleasure to watch when they love it so!

MacBeth, My youngest babe, now six months old, is named Oliver and when dh wrote on Facebook the other day that he was celebrating Olivier Messiaen's birthday, he got several replies like: "I can't believe it's been a whole year! Wow time flies! Give the little one our love." Oh well.

Nonetheless, Brooks had a piece of cake and the church choir sang Happy Birthday, Olivier while he accompanied in the style of Messiaen. ~jennifer
